side.gif (7382 bytes)Gallica Roses have been grown since the dark ages.  They reached their peak of popularity during the early 1800's.  Gallica Roses predominated in the Empress Josephine's gardens at Malmaison.  They are still widely treasured.

Gallica Roses bring new, more intense colors to the old rose gardens.   The colors range from very deep purples to almost white.  Many varieties are striped.  Gallicas were the original striped roses.

Gallica Roses are generally medium to low size bushes, with a spreading growth habit.  Fragrance is typically very good, some are stronger, some less so.  Their fragrance tends to intensify when the petals are dried.  They are grown commercially for pot puree.

As a class, gallicas are unaffected by the fungal diseases.  They may show a little blackspot and/or mildew late in the season (September or October), but by then the fall blooming mums have taken center stage in the garden.
