Apothecary’s Rose has been in cultivation since the Dark Ages. It was grown in monasteries throughout Europe for its medicinal purposes. The hips were a source of Vitamin C in northern Europe. The dried petals were used to mask other odors. Even without the medicinal aspects, Apothecary’s Rose is a welcome addition to our modern landscapes. Its lower size and the profusion of blooms during its spring/summer season, its resistance to fungal diseases, and its winter hardiness bring it to the forefront for consideration. Its interesting history is an added bonus
