side.gif (7382 bytes)Moss roses occrued as spontaneous sports in the Centifolia and Damask classes.  Flowers developed with bristly growth on the stems and buds.  These were welcomed as unique characteristics, and 19'th century hybridezers developed a whole new class of roses.

Moss Roses reached their peak in popularity during the Victorian Era, when a bouquet of moss roses signified, "I am not worth of you."  Today, Moss Roses offer a unique bit of history and beauty.

As a group, Moss roses are diverse.  Bush size ranges from almost miniature to very large shrubs (<2 - 6 foot).  Colors range from white to the darkest reds.  Fragrance is very good.  The moss ranges from very fine to very coarse and bristly with the characteristic balsam scent when touched.  Some Moss roses repeat prolifically.  Some Moss Roses only bloom once in June.  In any case, they are lovely, and a valued part of the world of roses.
